Face Casting - The History
Face casting is one of humanity's oldest impulses. The desire to preserve a living face in permanent form.

From the death masks of ancient Egypt and Rome to the life masks of Napoleon, Abraham Lincoln, and Beethoven, civilizations across time have reached for this same act: capturing the face as it truly is, in a specific moment, forever. It is an art of remembrance. Of presence made permanent.
The Craft
Today, face casting is a foundational technique in professional special effects makeup. Before any prosthetic appliance is built for film or television, a casting of the actor's face is taken - creating an exact replica that serves as the working surface for sculptors and makeup designers.

It is a practiced, body safe process used routinely across the industry. The materials are skin tested and widely trusted. The methodology is precise.
My Practice
As a working special effects makeup artist, I take face casting of actors regularly. It is a standard part of how I build and fit custom prosthetic pieces. I have done this many times, in professional environments and on working productions.
